BLOGGING ASSIGNMENT #1

Hello Biology Bloggers!
Let's see what in the in the news about what we are studying so far.  You can choose ANY topic that we have covered thus far in class (cells, proteins, DNA, diabetes).  Find the article from one of the following science websites and summarize the main points of the article for the class to read.  Then Post your summary along with a reflection on what you have read to this website.
Then write a reflection about what you think about the article and how it relates to class. Your post is due by Monday 11/19/12. This assignment is worth 20
points.

Then you will have a week to read and respond to 2 other students summaries. (10 pts)

    Skin cells reveal DNA's genetic mosaic

    Summary: "The prevailing wisdom has been that every cell in the body contains identical DNA. However, a new study of stem cells derived from the skin has found that genetic variations are widespread in the body's tissues, a finding with profound implications for genetic screening, according to Yale School of Medicine researchers. "
    "We found that humans are made up of a mosaic of cells with different genomes," said lead author Dr. Flora Vaccarino, the Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale Child study Center. "We saw that 30 percent of skin cells harbor copy number variations.(CNV) Which are segments of DNA that are deleted or duplicated. Previously it was assumed that these variations only occurred in cases od disease, such as cancer. The mosaic that we've seen in the skin could also be found in the blood, in the brain, and in other parts of the human body."
    Translation: not all DNA is the same and some things that we thought that caused cancer might not be bad.
    Reflection: I find this a little weird and cool. I mean when you think about it, your body is really 100 percent different. Not even your skin cells are the same. That to me is interesting in it's self.
